Welcome to the Spring 2004 online issue of a periodic newsletter for members and friends of the British-American Chamber of Commerce of Tampa Bay.

Celebrating Indian Culture Marion & Kiran Parmer

From saris and sandals to Nehru shirts and a turban (actually more reminiscent of “The Great Carnac”), the Tampa Bay BACC set aside the first evening of May to celebrate the influence of India on British culture. The event was hosted by Kiran and Marion Parmar. Kiran manages inward development for IBM, developing software/hardware solutions for major and mid-sized US and Canadian corporations - without outsourcing out of country.

Forty-two members and friends of the BACC, representing businesses ranging from the arts to aerospace, enjoyed an evening of food, entertainment, and networking. The guests converged upon the Parmar household to experience an array of Indian dishes, some of which were prepared by chef Kiran in an authentic Tandoori oven. There was something for everyone, with some of the items on the menu not for the faint of taste bud. Kiran prepared items by request, and offered guests education in the history and use of the Tandoori oven.

The evening marked the farewell of our Vice-Chair, Tim Carroll, of Kestrel International. Tim is relocating to Atlanta, and has already initiated involvement with the Atlanta chapter of the British-American Business Council. We were also pleased to welcome Richard Paulson of British Aerospace Systems’ flight simulation and manufacturing, and Nick and Harriet Helyer, who traveled from Orlando to join us. Nick, a major land developer in the Orlando area, is also the Chairman of Kismet Tea Company. Kismet directly imports classic English teas and an electric tea kettle that is specifically made for the US market. Initially only a hobby, this venture has turned into a full blown occupation!

Always the consummate hosts, Kiran and Marion provided an exceptional evening for all. This event is an example of the unique and enjoyable experiences available to members of the Tampa Bay BACC. Many thanks to Kiran and Marion for their hospitality and a delightful evening.
